There is such a variety of styles of building in Melbourne. It makes every view interesting. In the 1890s there was a big financial boom because of the money coming in from the goldfields. In fact, so much gold was brought into the city a new Treasury Building had to be built because the banks couldn't hold it all. Fortunately many beautiful old buildings remain. The new construction is mostly very cutting edge, "green" and also colourful. Most of the streets in the city centre are lined with plane trees (sycamores) and on a hot day that makes walking much more pleasant. Here's a small sample of the buildings that caught my eye.
The Forum Theatre (copy of a theatre in Chicago)
This Women's Health Centre building can be
seen in the 1959 movie "On The Beach".
This is the Contemporary Art Museum inner courtyard.
The Exhibition Building
This building uses the Munsterberg optical illusion.
The orange lines are parallel.
The Treasury Building
The Marriage Registry is also in this building!
