Melbourne's Buildings

There is such a variety of styles of building in Melbourne. It makes every view interesting. In the 1890s there was a big financial boom because of the money coming in from the goldfields. In fact, so much gold was brought into the city a new Treasury Building had to be built because the banks couldn't hold it all. Fortunately many beautiful old buildings remain. The new construction is mostly very cutting edge, "green" and also colourful. Most of the streets in the city centre are lined with plane trees (sycamores) and on a hot day that makes walking much more pleasant. Here's a small sample of the buildings that caught my eye.

The Forum Theatre (copy of a theatre in Chicago)

This Women's Health Centre building can be
seen in the 1959 movie "On The Beach".

This is the Contemporary Art Museum inner courtyard.

 The Exhibition Building

This building uses the Munsterberg optical illusion.
The orange lines are parallel.

The Treasury Building
The Marriage Registry is also in this building!

Melbourne

I love to walk around Melbourne with my camera and then share with you the interesting things I have seen. I'll start with the beautiful Domed Reading Room at the State Library [reference library]. The original library was opened in 1856 but eventually needed more space, so the reading room was built in 1913. At that time it was the largest reinforced concrete dome in the world! It is 35 meters (115 ft.) high and equally wide. The desks are of polished Queensland Silky Oak.

Elsie and her team...

Here we go...

Here I am in Melbourne, Australia, so
Welcome to the adventures of MY life.

One of the best started on the last day of 2011. My precious little granddaughter Elsie was born! Maybe her numerology was more accurate on that day, so she had to arrive 2 weeks early?? Maybe she was really anxious to "get going" with her life? Who knows? But we are all so delighted with her and happy that she is healthy. My daughter Jenny and her dear husband Josh are a wonderful team to show Elsie what to do. And I'm sure she will teach them a lot!
